Ultrasonographic Measurements of the Achilles Tendon in Elderly Athletes and Sedentary Men
1994
Ultrasonography was performed on the Achilles tendon of the dominant limb of 18 male elderly athletes and 11 sedentary men, aged 70 to 80 years. The tendons were examined with a real-time linear array scanner using a 7.5 MHz transducer. Both longitudinal and transverse images were taken. The mean width of the Achilles tendon was significantly larger in the athletes than in the control subjects. The tendon thickness and cross-sectional area did not differ significantly between the groups, but the figures may indicate a tendency for larger cross-sectional area in the athletes. The results suggest tendon hypertrophy following long-term training.
Upper and lower generalized factoraggregations based on fuzzy equivalence relation
2014
We develop the concept of a general factoraggre-gation operator introduced by the authors on the basis of an equivalence relation and applied in two recent papers for analysis of bilevel linear programming solving parameters. In the paper this concept is generalized by using a fuzzy equivalence relation instead of the crisp one. By using a left-continuous t-norm and its residuum we define and investigate two modifications of such generalized construction: upper and lower generalized factoraggregations. These generalized factoraggregations can be used for construction of extensional fuzzy sets.
A Widrow–Hoff Learning Rule for a Generalization of the Linear Auto-associator
1996
Abstract A generalization of the linear auto-associator that allows for differential importance and nonindependence of both the stimuli and the units has been described previously by Abdi (1988). This model was shown to implement the general linear model of multivariate statistics. In this note, a proof is given that the Widrow–Hoff learning rule can be similarly generalized and that the weight matrix will converge to a generalized pseudo-inverse when the learning parameter is properly chosen. The value of the learning parameter is shown to be dependent only upon the (generalized) eigenvalues of the weight matrix and not upon the eigenvectors themselves. This proof provides a unified framew…
Using the dglars Package to Estimate a Sparse Generalized Linear Model
2015
dglars is a publicly available R package that implements the method proposed in Augugliaro et al. (J. R. Statist. Soc. B 75(3), 471-498, 2013) developed to study the sparse structure of a generalized linear model (GLM). This method, called dgLARS, is based on a differential geometrical extension of the least angle regression method. The core of the dglars package consists of two algorithms implemented in Fortran 90 to efficiently compute the solution curve. dglars is a publicly available R package that implements the method proposed in Augugliaro et al. SYSTOLIC GENERATION OF k-ARY TREES
1999
The only parallel generating algorithms for k-ary trees are those of Akl and Stojmenović in 1996 and of Vajnovszki and Phillips in 1997. In the first of them, trees are represented by an inversion table and the processor model is a linear aray multicomputer. In the second, trees are represented by bitstrings and the algorithm executes on a shared memory multiprocessor. In this paper we give a parallel generating algorithm for k-ary trees represented by generalized P–sequences for execution on a linear array multicomputer.
Human papillomavirus genotype attribution in invasive cervical cancer: a retrospective cross-sectional worldwide study.
2010
Summary Background Knowledge about the distribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes in invasive cervical cancer is crucial to guide the introduction of prophylactic vaccines. We aimed to provide novel and comprehensive data about the worldwide genotype distribution in patients with invasive cervical cancer. Methods Paraffin-embedded samples of histologically confirmed cases of invasive cervical cancer were collected from 38 countries in Europe, North America, central South America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Inclusion criteria were a pathological confirmation of a primary invasive cervical cancer of epithelial origin in the tissue sample selected for analysis of HPV DNA, and informa…
Effect of the electromagnetic environment on arrays of small normal metal tunnel junctions: Numerical and experimental investigation
2000
We present results of a set of experiments to investigate the effect of dissipative external electromagnetic environment on tunneling in linear arrays of junctions in the weak tunneling regime. The influence of this resistance decreases as the number of junctions in the chain increases and ultimately becomes negligible. Further, there is a value of external impedance, typically \~5 k$\Omega$, at which the half-width of the zero-voltage dip in the conductance curve shows a maximum. Some new analytical formulae, based on the phase-correlation theory, along with numerical results will be presented.
A differential-geometric approach to generalized linear models with grouped predictors
2016
We propose an extension of the differential-geometric least angle regression method to perform sparse group inference in a generalized linear model. An efficient algorithm is proposed to compute the solution curve. The proposed group differential-geometric least angle regression method has important properties that distinguish it from the group lasso. First, its solution curve is based on the invariance properties of a generalized linear model. Second, it adds groups of variables based on a group equiangularity condition, which is shown to be related to score statistics. An adaptive version, which includes weights based on the Kullback-Leibler divergence, improves its variable selection fea…
Synthesis of a Linear Assembly Consisting of a Central Ru(Phen)32+ Derivative and Two Peripheral Porphyrins
2002
A ruthenium(II) precursor complex containing a bis-phenanthroline ligand, leading to a controlled helical structure around the metal centre, and a third phenanthroline-type ligand has been prepared. The spatial arrangement of the system is such that two chemical groups are disposed trans to one another on an axis running through the Ru centre. By appropriate functional group transformation, these two groups can be attached to monosubstituted zinc(II) porphyrins (PZn) to afford a linear array consisting of a central ruthenium(II) complex and two peripheral PZn motifs.
